At Pure Roots we believe that nutrition is the foundation of a healthy life. And that our focus on functional nutrition, lifestyle, environment, building sustainable habits, cooking skills, and an individualized, whole person approach is what ultimately leads to a more vibrant and joy-filled life.

While many of our clients are physician referrals working with individuals with chronic health concerns, we welcome anyone who is simply looking to prevent disease, age well, or stress less around what to eat.

A functional nutritionist is a board-certified nutrition expert with advanced training in functional medicine. At Pure Roots, we take a root-cause, systems-based approach to care, which means we look beyond symptoms to understand how food, lifestyle, genetics, and environment shape your overall health. Whether you’re looking for an integrative and holistic nutritionist, a lifestyle medicine practitioner, a gut health nutritionist, a hormone health nutritionist, a brain health nutritionist, or a practitioner who simply knows food is medicine, you’re in the right place.

Functional nutrition prioritizes personalized plans, prevention, long-term balance, and health optimization. We consider everything from gut health and inflammation to hormones, metabolism, blood sugar regulation, and nervous system function. This training allows us to uncover underlying imbalances and use nutrition, lifestyle changes, targeted supplements, and sometimes lab testing to restore wellness and prevent chronic disease—all tailored specifically to you.

Schedule a free 20 minute discovery call here.  We’ll discuss your nutrition challenges and goals, and answer any upfront questions you have about what to expect in working together. If we’re not the right place for you, we’ll do our best to refer you to someone else who might be. If you’re looking for an integrative and functional nutritionist to help you with gut health, brain health, perimenopause, hormonal balance, and autoimmune conditions, schedule your free call today.

The 25-Day Guided Sugar Cleanses are all offered virtually by webinar and through a private group. A registered dietitian (RD) is a licensed health professional who typically has at least a bachelor’s degree in nutrition or dietetics, completes a supervised internship, and passes a national exam; RDs are recognized by medical boards and often work in clinical or hospital settings. A Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS), however, must have a master’s or doctoral degree, 1,000 hours of supervised practice, and pass a rigorous board exam. Shelly, as a CNS trained in functional medicine, takes a preventative, personalized, and root-cause approach—focusing on the whole person and long-term disease prevention, rather than just treating symptoms.

Yes! At Pure Roots, we support all types of diets and ways of eating—whether you’re vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore. Come as you are. Shelly is trained in natural foods culinary arts, with a strong focus on vegetarian cuisine, and can help you create balanced, nourishing meals. She emphasizes a plant-centric approach with all her clients. Whether your dietary choices are based on religion, spirituality, culture, animal welfare, or personal preference, Shelly respects your unique journey and works with you where you are, knowing that every body is different and there’s no one perfect diet for everyone.

Pure Roots’ services are self-pay and are not billed directly to insurance. However, you may be able to use your Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) to cover nutrition services.  Treatment for obesity, hypertension, or heart disease is an example of what is typically covered. Contact your insurance company or HSA provider in advance to confirm. If you’d like a Superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement, one can be provided.

Group classes are offered to make nutrition more affordable and accessible if a 1-1 Nutrition Plan is not currently in your budget.

Shelly is also a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN) by the Maryland Board of Dietetic Practice. *** While a CNS can legally provide nutrition support to patients in most all states in the U.S.,  some states may limit this scope to general nutrition counseling.

Absolutely. In fact, most of my clients are referalls from their physicians. What I do best is get into the weeds and help clients to implement the nutrition protocol provided by their physician and execute on a plan. This is tremendously supportive to your physician’s healing plan for you and is therefore a wonderful complement. Note that I do not diagnose and my services should not be a substitution for care of a physician. Caring for certain diseases and conditions may be out of my scope, to which I’ll clearly communicate upfront where I can support your calre and where I cannot. I may refer out to other care providers who would be a better fit for your needs.
